영어로 대화 할 때 유용한 기술; Echo questions and words, 'Wh' follow-up questions

 

영어로 Small talk를 할 때, 상대방이 내 이야기에 흥미를 느끼고 있다고 생각하면 훨씬 편하게 대화를 계속 할 수 있습니다.

이렇게 대화에 집중을 하고 있다는 표현을 함으로써, 분위기를 상승시키고 대화를 계속 이어가게 하는 대화 테크닉이 있습니다. 바로 Echo questions, Echo words, Showing attention and agreement, 그리고 'Wh' follow-up 입니다.

이 테크닉은 대화 내용을 정확하게 파악하고 화자의 의도를 파악하는 데에도 사용될 수 있습니다.

 

Echo Questions

Echo Question은 be동사, 조동사, 또는 동사 'do' 를 사용해서 대화 내용을 되묻는 테크닉입니다.

 

[Echo Questions 예시]

I can speak three languages.

- Can you? (조동사 사용)

 

She works as a nurse.

- Does she? ('do' 사용)

 

It's a really nice book to read.

- Is it? (be 동사 사용)

 

 

Echo Words

키워드를 반복해 되물음으로써 대화에 흥미가 있음을 표현하는 방법입니다. Echo words를 적절하게 사용하면 대화의 방향을 정할 수도 있습니다.

I have just bought a new car. It cost $100,000!

- $100,000!

 

It took me three hours to get there.

- Three hours!

 

Attention and Agreement

Small talk를 할 때 적절한 반응을 보임으로써 대화에 집중하고 있거나 상대방의 말에 동의하고 있음을 표현할 수 있습니다. 

Attention과 Agreement를 나타내는 표현의 예시는 아래와 같습니다.

'Wh' Follow-up Questions

대화에 대한 관심을 표현하고 대화를 이어나가는 방법입니다. 또한 'Wh' Follow-up Question를 사용함으로써 추가 정보를 알아내거나 대화 내용을 보다 명확하게 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 'Wh' Follow-up Question을 남용하면 대화 상대를 쪼는(?) 느낌을 줄 수 있으니 Echo question, Agreement 단어 등 다른 테크닉과 함께 사용하는 것이 좋습니다.
